더 사이클리스트 Ep. 5 : 김은경

은경씨와의 첫 만남은 알 수 없는 익숙함으로 다가왔습니다. 그 익숙함의 기저에는 자전거를 타고 있다는 공통분모와 함께, 자전거에 대한 애정과 편애라는 마음가짐이 자리하고 있습니다. 그녀에게 자전거는 일상의 균형을 잡아주는 의미있는 도구입니다. 균형이라는 것은 가운데 있으려고 노력하는 것이 아닌, 양 극단을 오고가며 최적점을 찾아나가는 과정이죠. 그녀가 선택한 그래블 바이크도 그 맥락 속에 자리잡고 있습니다.

My first meeting with Eunkyung came with a strange familiarity. At the base of that familiarity lies the common denominator of riding a bicycle and the mindset of affection and favoritism for bikes. For her, a bicycle is a meaningful tool to balance her daily life. The balance is not about trying to be in the middle; it’s about going back and forth between the extremes and finding the optimum. Her choice of a gravel bike is also in that context.

바쁜 일상 속에서 놓치기 쉬운 감정들, 설렘과 기대 그리고 시간이 지날수록 옅어져만가는 젊음의 흔적들. 자전거가 매력적인 이유는 속도가 주는 쾌감이 아닌 그 이후의 잔상이라고 생각합니다. 그 잔상의 촉감을 느끼다보면, 우리가 일상 속에서 잊고 있었던 감정의 부드러움이 담겨있죠. 그 매력에 취해 우리는 안장에 오르고 있는 것일지도.

Emotions that are easy to miss in busy daily life, excitement and anticipation, and traces of youth that fade over time. I think the reason why bicycles are attractive is not the pleasure of speed but the afterimage afterward. When you feel the touch of the afterimage, it contains the tenderness of the emotions we’ve forgotten in our daily lives. Maybe we’re getting into the saddle with that charm.

오현 : 라이딩 사진에서 알 수 없는 여유로움이 느껴졌어요. 그 여유로움이 자연스러움으로 다가왔고요. 유쾌한 첫 인상이었습니다. 은경씨는 언제부터 자전거를 타기 시작하셨나요?

Ohyun : I felt a strange sense of relaxation in the riding picture. That relaxation came to me naturally. It was a pleasant first impression. Eunkyung, when did you start riding a bicycle?

은경 : 자전거를 처음 배운건 제가 20대 중반이었던 2006년이었습니다. 일반적으로, 사람들은 유년시절에 자전거를 자연스럽게 배우고 어른이 되어 본격적인 취미로서의 라이딩을 하기 시작하지만, 저는 자전거를 배움과 동시에, 자전거에 깊히 빠져들기 시작했죠.

Eunkyung : I first learned how to ride a bicycle in my mid-20s. In general, people naturally learn to ride bikes in their childhood and begin to ride as a full-fledged hobby as an adult, but as soon as I learned to ride them, I began to fall deeply into them.

오현 : 자전거를 시작하게 된 특별한 계기가 있으셨나요?

Ohyun : Did you have any particular reason to start cycling?

은경 : 저는 어릴때부터 달리기도 잘하고, 모든 운동을 좋아했지만 겁이 많은 성격이었어요. 겁이 많은 성격 때문에 자전거는 평생 못 탈 수도 있겠다는 생각을 했습니다. 저는 한강에서 인라인을 타곤 했는데, 그때마다 한강 자전거 도로를 신나게 달리는 자전거들을 보며 막연히 배워보고 싶다는 생각을 갖게 되었어요. 그래서 그 길로 자전거 매장으로 가서 16인치 바구니달린 베네통 미니벨로를 사서 사람들 없는 공원에서 혼자 연습한 것이 자전거와의 첫 인연이었습니다. 얼마전 열린 싸이월드에 그 소중한 기록들이 다 남아있더라구요.

Eunkyung : I have been good at running since I was young and liked all sports, but I was a coward. I thought I might not be able to ride a bicycle for the rest of my life because of my timid personality. However, I used to ride inline rides on the Han River, and every time I saw bicycles running on the Han River bike path, I vaguely wanted to learn. So it was my first relationship with a bike that I went to a bicycle store, bought a Benetton Mini Bello with a basket, and practiced alone in a deserted park. All those precious records were left in Cyworld, which was recently opened.

오현 : 그동안 거쳐온 자전거들은 어떻게 되나요? 가장 마음에 담고 있는 자전거가 무엇인지 궁금합니다.

Ohyun : What about the bicycles that you’ve been through? I wonder what bikes you have in mind the most.

은경 : 베네통 16인치 미니벨로와 스트라이다를 타다가 트리곤mtb를 타게 되었어요. 한강 자전거도로에서 폭우때 쓸려나온 모래에 자전거가 미끄러지면서 무릎을 크게 쓸리고 나서, ‘역시 큰바퀴는 위험해..’라는 생각을 하고 다시 미니스프린터 계열 바이크 프라이데이nwt 로 기변했었습니다. 그 후 출산과 육아로 인해 자전거를 4년쯤 쉬었구요.

Eunkyung : I was riding Benetton 16-inch mini velo and Strider, and I ended up riding the Trigon MTB. After the bicycle slipped on the sand washed out during the heavy rain on the Han River bike road and swept my knees, I thought, “As expected, big wheels are dangerous…” and changed to a mini sprinter bike called Friday NWT again. After that, I rested on my bike for about four years due to childbirth and care.

2013년, 다시 라이딩을 시작해보려고 한강자전거도로에 나서니 한강에는 로드바이크의 물결이더군요. 그래서 그 호기심에 이끌려 캐논데일 슈퍼식스 우먼으로 로드바이크를 시작하게 되었습니다. 로드바이크의 매력에 이끌려 자전거를 열심히 타다보니 더 잘타고 싶은 욕심이 생겨 얼마 못가 팔리 z5i 로 기변했었고 작년까지 브롬톤과 함께 병행해서 타다가 제 최애 자전거인 지금의 오픈 업 U.P. 사하라를 만나게 되었습니다.

In 2013, I went on the Han River bike lane to start riding again, and it was a wave of road bikes on the road. So I started my road bike as a Cannondale Super Six Woman because of that curiosity. As the charm of road bikes attracted me, I wanted to ride a bike better, so I changed to Parlee Z5i. I rode it with Brompton until last year and met my favorite bicycle, the OPEN U.P. Sahara.

오현 : 미니벨로부터, 로드바이크까지 다양한 장르의 자전거를 가리지 않고 타셨네요. 그 종착점이 그래블 바이크라는 것이 무척 흥미롭습니다. 그래블 바이크, 그 중에서도 오픈 업 U.P. 사하라를 구매하게 된 계기가 있으셨나요?

Ohyun : You rode all kinds of bicycles, from mini velos to road bikes. It’s fascinating that the end point of your choice is a gravel bike. How did you buy the gravel bike, especially the OPEN U.P. Sahara?

은경 : 로드바이크를 오래 타다보니 자연스럽게 제 한계치까지 밀어붙이게 되더라고요. 그것이 로드바이크가 주는 매력이기도 하지만 라이딩을 하다가 몇번의 사고위험을 겪고나서 무서워지기 시작했습니다. 그래서 브롬톤을 구매하고 평지 위주로 한강라이딩을 많이 했었어요. 하지만 로드바이크를 타던 사람이라서 그런지 자꾸 큰바퀴에 미련이 남더라구요.

Eunkyung : Since I rode a road bike for a long time, I naturally pushed it to my limit. That’s the charm of road bikes, but after a few accidents, while riding, I started to get scared. So I bought a Brompton and did a lot of Han River riding. But maybe it’s because I used to ride a road bike, but I couldn’t stop thinking about the big wheels.

단순한 생각으로 바퀴가 두꺼운 자전거를 타면 좀 낫지 않겠냐는 생각에 그래블 바이크에 관심이 가기 시작했어요. 엠티비는 왠지 저에게는 조금 부담이 되었고요. 고민을 하던 차에, 고글 보러 간다던 자덕친구를 따라 팀바이크에 갔다가 대리판매를 위해 진열해놓은 오픈 업 U.P. 사하라를 보고 반하게 되었어요.

I started to get interested in a gravel bike because I thought it would be better to ride a heavy-wheeled bicycle with a simple idea. MTB was a bit of a burden for me. While thinking about it, I followed my friend who was going to see goggles on Teambike, and I fell in love with the OPEN U.P. Sahara displayed for sale.

오현 : 그래블 바이크는 로드바이크에 비해 잘 나가지 않는다는 선입견이 많은데, 직접 라이딩을 해 보니 어떤 느낌이시던가요?

Ohyun : There are a lot of prejudices that gravel bikes don’t go well compared to road bikes, so how did you feel when you rode them yourself?

은경 : 그 느낌은 기존에 제가 타던 팔리와 비교를 할수 밖에 없네요. 오픈 업 U.P. 의 첫 느낌은 팔리와 비교해도 전혀 아쉬울게 없는 ‘좀 더 최신기술을 이용한 바퀴가 조금 두꺼운 로드바이크구나’ 라는 생각이었어요. 팔리는 2014년식이었으니까요. 하지만 시간이 갈 수록 좀 더 안정적으로 자전거를 타고싶어서 타이어 세팅을 변경했어요. 32c 피렐리 타이어에서 38c 르네헐스 타이어로 변경했습니다. 그후에 지금까지 계속 38c 르네헐스 타이어를 타고 있구요

Eunkyung : Ride feeling can only compare that feeling to the one I used to ride on. The first feeling of the OPEN U.P. was that it was a road bike with a bit thicker wheels using more advanced technology, which was nothing to be desired compared to Parlee. Parlee was the 2014 model year. But as time passed, I wanted to ride a bicycle more stably, so I changed the tire set. Changed from 32c Pirelli tires to 38c Rene Herse tires. I’ve been riding a 38c Rene herse tire ever since

오히려 38c로 바꾼게 다운힐 트라우마 극복에 큰 도움이 되었습니다. 지금 이 상황에서 내 바퀴가 두껍지 않았다면 낙차하지 않았을까 하는 순간들도 많이 겪었으니까요. 파워미터와 엄청 무거운 루트웍스 가방까지 달고도 로드바이크 탈때 후미에 따라가면서 세운 기록들을 제가 선두서면서 레코드를 갱신하고 있는 것을 보면 탁월한 선택이었다는 생각이 듭니다.

Somewhat, changing to 38c helped me overcome the trauma of going Downhill. In this situation, I have experienced many moments where I would have fallen if my wheels weren’t thick. So I think it was an excellent choice when I saw that I was leading the way and updating the record while following the back of the road bike, even with a power meter and a hefty Rootworks bag.

오현 : 사하라 컬러를 고르셨는데, 어떤 이유에서 이 컬러를 선택하셨나요?

Ohyun : You chose Sahara; why did you choose this color?

은경 : 나만의 자전거 스타일을 표현하고 싶을때 자전거와 의류를 함께 믹스매칭을 많이 하잖아요. 사하라 색상은 사람의 피부색과 비슷해서 어떤 색의 옷을 입어도 자전거와 잘 어울리는 느낌이랄까요.. 이미 사람의 피부와 톤과 매너가 같아서 어떤 옷을 입어도 자연스럽게 표현이 되는 느낌이에요. 실제로 저는 리어나 프레임 아랫부분 작은 스크래치들도 제 화장품과 클리어를 섞어 커버업 하기도 합니다.

Eunkyung : You mix and match bicycles and clothes when you want to express your own bike style. The color of the Sahara is similar to human skin, so it feels like it goes well with a bicycle no matter what color you wear. It already has the same skin tone and manners as a person, so it feels like you can express it naturally, no matter what you wear. I also cover up minor scratches on the rear or the bottom of the frame by mixing my cosmetics and clear.

오현 : 은경씨가 서울에서 가장 추천하고 싶은 코스, 그리고 라이딩 중간에 들리는 좋아하는 공간에 대해서 한번 공유해주세요.

Ohyun : Eunkyung, please share the course you want to recommend the most in Seoul and your favorite space in the middle of the ride.

은경 : 저는 투어라이딩 보다는 한강과 한강에 연결된 천들 위주로 지인들과 맛집 혹은 카페를 목적지로하는 라이딩을 하는 편입니다. 중랑천을 따라 올라가면 바로 자전거도로와 연결된 중랑천이 보이는 “조금 느린집” 이라는 카페가 있는 그 곳을 참 제가 좋아하는듯 합니다.

Eunkyung : Rather than tour riding, I usually ride with my acquaintances at restaurants or cafes, focusing on the fabric connected to the Han River, and the Han River is my destination. I think I like the place where there is a cafe called “A Little Slow House” where you can see Jungnang Stream connected to the bicycle road when you go up Jungnang Stream.

오현 : 사진을 보면 다양한 착장을 갖추시고 타시더라고요. 추천하고 싶은 제품 라인업은?

Ohyun : If you look at the picture, they’re wearing various outfits. What brand of clothes do you usually wear? Which product line do you want to recommend?

은경 : 저는 로드를 오래 타기도 했고 제 체형에 대해 잘 알고 있어서 사실 모델컷만 봐도 이건 저랑 어울리겠다 아니겠다 파악이 돼서 굳이 매장구매를 하지 않고 공홈구매를 하는 편입니다. 그래서 국내 공식수입되지 않은 옷들도 좀 가지고 있습니다. 주로 PNS와 RAPHA explore 라인 그리고 Cafe du cycliste 의 Gravel 라인 옷들을 많이 입습니다. 오픈 업 U.P. 은 로드착장에도 그래블의류에도 다 잘어울려요.

Eunkyung : I’ve been on the road for a long time, and I know my body type well, so just looking at the model cut, I think it’ll look good on me. I don’t buy it at the store because I understand it, but I tend to buy it on the official website. So I have some clothes that are not officially imported into Korea. I usually wear PNS, RAPHA explorer and Cafe du cyclist’s gravel line clothes. OPEN U.P. goes well with both road wear and gravel clothing.

오현 : 슈즈는 라이딩의 시작이자 마무리죠. 다양한 그래블 슈즈를 소장하고 계신데, 슈즈를 선택한 스토리와 만족감에 대한 이야기를 듣고 싶어요.

Ohyun : Shoes are the beginning and the end of riding. You have a variety of gravel shoes, and I’d like to hear about the story of choosing shoes and the satisfaction.

은경 : 제가 가지고 있는 그래블 슈즈는 QUOC 쿽 그랜투어러 2, 피직 테라 에르고레이스 X2, 그리고 피직 X4 파워스트랩, 그리고 라파의 GT슈즈를 어댑터를 이용해서 그래블 슈즈로 신고 있습니다. QUOC 쿽 슈즈는 작년 제품은 너무 남성적인 느낌이라 선뜻 구매하게 되지 않았는데 올해 나온 QUOC 쿽 그랜투어러 2는 로드 풀 착장에 신어도 무리가 없을만큼 투박하지 않고 이쁜데다가 다이얼방식이라 정말 편하더라구요. 운동화 처럼 생긴 클릿 슈즈들은 편하고 걷기 좋지만 장거리를 타면 발바닥에 핫 스팟이 생기기도 하더라구요.

Eunkyung : the gravel shoes I have are QUOC Gran Tourer 2, Fizik Terra Ergo Lace x2, Fizik x4 Power Strap, and Rapha GT shoes as gravel shoes using an adapter. QUOC Shoes last year was too masculine for me, so I didn’t buy them easily. This year’s QUOC Gran Tourer 2 is not too rough and pretty to wear in road pool clothes, and it’s comfortable because it’s dialed. Cleat shoes that look like sneakers are comfortable and easy to walk, but if you ride long distances, you can get hot spots on the soles of your feet.

오현 : 자전거를 통해 다시 자신감을 찾으셨다는 그 부분이 참 공감되었어요. 라이딩을 하다보면 느낄 수 있는 자유로운 순간과 속도가 만드는 몰입감이 사이클링을 특별하게 만들죠. 직장을 다니면서, 가정을 이루면서, 자전거를 타는 시간을 만드는 노하우를 듣고 싶어요.

Ohyun : I could relate to how you regained your confidence by riding a bicycle. The free moment you can feel while riding and the speed’s immersion make cycling special. I want to hear the know-how to make time to ride a bicycle while going to work and making a family.

은경 : 저에게 자전거는 이제 놓을 수 없는 일상의 한 부분입니다. 자전거 타면서 얻은 행복감이 정말 크기 때문이에요. 잠잘시간 휴식시간을 줄이는 것 뿐만 아니라, 자투리시간에라도 라이딩을 하기 위해 매일 일기예보를 보고 라이딩 일정이 없는 날에 맞춰 회식날짜나 다른 스케줄을 잡습니다. 비오는 날 파마하는 거 아니라는데 저는 항상 자전거 스케쥴 때문에 비오는날에만 미용실을 갈 정도니까요.

Eunkyung : Bicycles are an essential part of my daily life for me. This is because the happiness I get from riding a bicycle is great. I reduce my sleeping time by riding a bike, and I watch the weather forecast daily to ride out in my spare time. Schedule a company dinner date or other schedules according to the day when there is no riding schedule. Everyone says no one get a perm on a rainy day, but I always go to a hair salon only on rainy days because of my bike schedule.

오현 : 마지막으로 그래블 바이크 구매를 고민하는 분들에게 조언을 하자면?

Ohyun : Lastly, do you have any advice for those thinking about buying a gravy bike?

은경 : 저처럼 자전거 오래 타셨고 앞으로도 오래 타실분들께 추천합니다. 이제 로드에 입문하신 분들은 통통튀는 경쾌한 로드사이클의 매력에 빠져계실테지만 그 시기가 지나고 흔히 말하는 자태기로 자전거 생활 접는 분들도 정말 많이 봤거든요. 새로운 주행감.. 새로운 코스.. 그래블이지만 로드바이크과 함께해도 전혀 무리가 없을때 느껴지는 뿌듯함.. 다시 자전거가 즐거워집니다.

Eunkyung : I recommend it to those who have been riding bicycles for a long time, like me, and will continue to ride them for a long time. Those of you who are new to Road bikes will be fascinated by the cheerful road cycling, but after that period, I’ve seen a lot of people who gave up riding their bicycles. A new feeling of riding… A new course… My bike is a gravel bike, but it’s no problem to ride with a road bike group. I feel proud, then. The bike is fun again.
